Teaching Statement
Teaching dance is both a privilege and a great honor.
As a teacher I encourage self reflection, resiliency, and intrinsic motivation within my students to create a student-centered environment.
I address topics of self-management and communication through partner activities, group work, and student choice.
At the core of my teaching efforts is the recognition of the knowledge students already possess as valuable in their learning and the learning of others.
The role of the teacher serves as both a guide to facilitate the sharing of information and a cheerleader for student inspiration.
Workshops Offered
Dancing from Paint
For intermediate/advanced adult dancers/makers
This experiential workshop will provide dance artists and choreographers with tools to interact with visual arts in their creative work by elaborating on a list of methods used for generating movement. Attendees can expect a brief interactive lecture with visual aids, followed by movement exploration of ideas and practices that can be implemented in their performance and choreography. Those in attendance will be prompted to explore a variety of visual art pieces through improvisation and the creation of movement phrases. Dancers should come ready to move.
Improvisation Through Ballet
For intermediate dancers
Ballet shoes or socks required
Improvisation through Ballet will invite dancers to explore a typical ballet class structure while making bold choices throughout. This movement based class will offer landmarks of familiar vocabulary in ways that allow dancers to approach ballet exercises and combinations in ways that resemble improvisational scores. The class will include barre exercises, center combinations, across the floor, jumps, and more. Because of the improvisational component, this class is suitable for all levels. Dancers have the agency to approach movement with choice making and personal artistry in order to make it suitable for their exploration.
